Safety measures for your puppy

When you bring a new puppy into your home, accidents are bound to happen no matter how well your puppy appears to behave. Your little puppy is an excited little dog who loves to play and just like any young critter playing, cuts, scrapes and a lot more can potentially happen and for this reason just like a little baby in your home, you need to puppy proof your home.

Just a single blink of an eye and that little puppy’s curiosity can lead him into harm’s way. They require constant attention all the time to keep them from getting into something that could harm them, but what happens when you are unable to give him or her that constantly watchful eye? Taking a series of safety measures to ensure your puppy stays healthy and playful is an important task for any new puppy owner.

1) First off, you have to remember that a puppy loves putting things in his mouth and this can be a dangerous thing. You need to take the time to locate anything within the puppy’s reach that could potentially be a choking hazard to the puppy and move it elsewhere.

While some items that your puppy may swallow will just simply pass right through accompanied perhaps by some discomfort, but some items your puppy cannot pass. These items can get lodged in the puppies throat or even in its intestines. In the worst case scenario, these choking hazards can prove to be fatal to the little puppy.

2) Just like dealing with things that can be swallowed, puppies also love things that they can chew on and they do not understand the difference between a string or rope and an electrical cord. You have electrical cords in every single room of your house and should the puppy decide to play with one he could get the shock of his life as well as potentially die.

Electrocution to your puppy can happen on many different levels from a mild burn to 3rd degree burns and fatal shock. There are a number of ways to keep these electrical cords away from your puppy which includes elevating them above your puppy’s reach or duct taping them to the floor so your puppy cannot see them.

3) It is also very important that you keep anything that is toxic or poisonous to your puppy, out of the reach of the puppy. Since they love chewing on things, there is nothing to stop them from chewing on bottles filled with poisons. Poisons to a puppy can include such items as rat poison, anti-freeze, lead, household garbage as well as chocolate.

House training is something that is vital if you want to have a good experience of being a dog owner. It is a training that should stay with your dog for his whole life so its worth getting it right from the start. A lot of people think that this is a difficult task, that it will take months of work, but in reality it is one of the simplest things to achieve. It took me just four days to house train my puppy, to give him a command for going to the toilet that he always responds to, and with the following methods, you can be just as successful. It may take a few weeks, depending on you, your attitude, your living arrangements and many other factors, but with patience and lots of time and effort, you can have a perfectly house-trained dog for life.

This method does not entail using a crate, just regularly keep your dog in one particular area of the house, especially when unsupervised. Its best if its an easily cleaned floor, such as a linoleum in the bathroom, as there will be a few accidents to start with. You cannot allow your puppy to wander around the whole house unsupervised as she will just go to the toilet whenever she feels like it without being trained to do otherwise. Make sure your puppy has a nice comfortable bed in her chosen area and that she is happy to use it. Once she establishes the bed as her own, she is less likely to mess near it. You should also ensure that she is happy in this area – fresh water should always be available, and play with her and pet her there so she feels happy, safe and secure.

The key to this method of house training is observing your puppys behaviour, so you must spend lots of time with her. The other important factor is to have a regular routine for feeding. Puppies usually need to go to the toilet after eating, so a routine will help you both. Check also that her food and water and the quantities are suiting her digestive system. You cant house train a dog who has diarrhoea, so this must be sorted out right at the beginning. Speak to your vet if you cant resolve this yourself or if there are urinary problems – it could be an infection.

So heres the procedure, once you have everything in place. Think of a command word that you will use every time you see your puppy about to go to the toilet or when you want to encourage her to do so. When she wakes in the morning, within half an hour after eating and before she goes to sleep, you should take her to her toilet area (this will either be some newspaper on the floor or a convenient area just outside the back door in the garden) and give her the command. The likelihood is that, if you are patient enough, she will go to the toilet and you can praise her for doing so in the right place. When a puppy is young, they have little control and a small capacity for urine and faeces in their system, so you should take her out every two hours so she has the opportunity to go if she wants to.

When you are spending time with your puppy (and you should spend a lot time with her at this point in her life) you must observe her and become familiar with her behaviour when shes about to go to the toilet – mine looks agitated and walks around with his knees slightly bent just before he goes, sniffing the ground in circles. Once you know this, you can pre-empt your own puppys need, and either pick her up or call her quickly to her toilet area. Once your puppy is in the toilet area, give your toilet command in a friendly encouraging tone. If she walks away from the toilet area, lead her gently back there and give the command. If your puppy is really averse to going in that area, look for a reason why – there could be a good reason that needs addressing.

When your dog successfully goes to the toilet in the correct area, praise her and maybe give her a favourite treat. Each and every time she does as youve asked, in the toilet area, praise her enthusiastically. This is positive reinforcement and is the most important aspect of this training method. Soon, your puppy will look at you or whine when she wants to go to the toilet. You must be there, ready to respond quickly otherwise she will have an accident. If you are using newspaper in the house, this can be gradually moved outdoors, so that she understands that that is the new toilet area.

DO NOT chastise your dog when she gets it wrong. She will not understand why youre telling her off and it will only confuse her. You should also be careful to clean up any accidents with a detergent that removes the smell – dogs like to mess again where they have left their scent and you need to discourage this through thorough cleaning practices.

So, to re-cap, spend lots of time with your puppy, learn her pre-toilet behaviour and pre-empt it. Lead her to her toilet area and give the toilet command. Praise her abundantly when she goes on command in the right place. Keep her living area clean, comfortable and fun to be in for both of you. Above all, be patient – house training does take time and your dog has a lot to learn at this stage of her life. She need lots of love, lots of fun and games and lots of encouragement.

Ah those lovable dogs and their cute and clever antics! Don’t we love the way they play fetch and run and jump and roll around and lick us affectionately and pee all over the carpet and…

Pee all over the carpet? Well we don’t love that aspect of dog ownership, now do we?

Dogs can be housebroken and trained to let their owners know when they need to go outside and make a little weedle or some other bigger job, but before that happens – and sometimes after as well – the interior of your home becomes Rover’s marked territory. The stains and smells of Phydeaux’s little mishaps and dishonorable discharges can leave a lasting impression on rugs and carpets, furniture, and other items in your home if they’re not taken care of immediately.

If you’re fortunate enough to catch Duke in the act of relieving himself all over the Persian rug that was a gift from your mother-in-law, take the steps that have to do with the dog’s training and then attend to the poodle puddle right away. Use a rag or some paper towels to soak up as much of the mess as possible and then clean the area with a mixture of cold or lukewarm (never hot) water and some sort of cleaning agent. Peroxide works well at removing the chance of a stain as well as the odor, but it should not be used on certain fabrics or dyes. A dab of dishwashing liquid (the kind you use in the sink, not the dishwasher) mixed with water can do a good job on these fresh marks as well.

For stains that have been allowed to sit for a time you’ll need to take slightly more drastic measures. Organic cleansers like Spot Shot work best on stains like these and should be chosen over chemicals. If you do use chemicals, peroxide is your friend once again as it can act as a terrific stain remover. Again you’ll want to dilute with warm water and apply it to the area. Some scrubbing will be necessary, but it should be done as gently as possible, depending on the type of fabric. If we’re talking about carpet, some vigorous scrubbing will probably be okay as the fibers are designed to take a bit of a beating.

If the soiled items are washable fabrics like clothing, towels, or small throw rugs, the stains should come out in the wash. Put the item in the washer by itself with the regular laundry detergent that you would normally use and some color safe bleach (whites can and should be done with regular chlorine bleach).

The best way to deal with doggie urine stains is to avoid having them happen in the first place, which can be accomplished through careful and meticulous training. If the occasional whoopsie does happen, don’t lose your head. Deal with the dog in the appropriate manner and rest easy in the knowledge that, in most cases, pee washes out.

In this article I am going to tell you a few things about training your dog that will make him or her even more valuable to everyone in your family. I would like to share some things that I have learned with you about training your dog.br /
br /
There are some important basics you need to learn to successfully train your dog before we start. Obedience commands are important for laying a foundation in communicating between you and your dog, it creates a common language that you and your dog understand.br /
br /
To Many new dog owners never really establish this kind of communication, and end up struggling with a disobedient dog as a result. There are many styles of training for your dog, but I want to stick to the basics and not get things to complicated for you.br /
br /
The training I want to tell you about is the leash and collar technique, its widely used and is very effective if done correctly. The leash and collar can be used in varying degrees of force from mild to harsh, but not cruel, and should never be used to nag your dog with ineffective correction.br /
br /
Generally the leash is used as the main form of control to help you teach your dog each new behavior. Once it displays that it knows a command the leash will be used to correct the dogs behavior.br /
br /
I always use basic commands when I have train my dogs and it has worked well for me. If you dont know any basic commands here are just a few easy ones that most dog owners know;br /
br /
Heel- (to walk on a loose leash)br /
br /
Sitbr /
br /
Staybr /
br /
Downbr /
br /
Fetchbr /
br /
Release – (To release an object from its mouth)br /
br /
One thing you need to know is, the leash and collar is just one of the many tools to help you train your dog. Leash training can never replace leader/follower relationship between the owner and the dog. Leash training will increase the bond between you and your dog, but can never replace trust that can only come from you and how you treat your dog.br /
br /
Positive reinforcement training can also help you train your dog to learn these basic commands. Encouraging them with petting and positive, cheerful words much like you do with a baby who catches a ball. You can even applaud. Giving your dog treats is also effective when training your dog to performs certain tasks.br /
br /
There are, as I said before, many ways to train your dog. I hope this article will encourage you to do a little more research on the topic so you can train your dog to be the best he or she can be.br /

Separation anxiety, also known in the dog training world as owner absent misbehavior, is one of the most frequently encountered problems in the world of dog training. Separation anxiety can manifest itself in many different ways, including chewing, destroying the owner’s property, excessive barking, self destructive behavior and inappropriate urination and defecation.br /
br /
Dogs suffering from separation anxiety often whine, bark, cry, howl, dig, chew and scratch at the door the entire time their family members are away. Well meaning owners often unwittingly encourage this misbehavior by rushing home to reassure the dog, but it is important for the well being of both dog and owner that the dog learn to deal with extended periods of separation.br /
br /
How the owner leaves the house can often contribute to separation anxiety issues. A long and drawn out period of farewell can make matters worse by making the dog feel even more isolated when the owner finally leaves. These long types of farewells can get the dog excited, and then leave him with lots of excess energy and no way to work it off. These excited, isolated dogs often work off their excess energy in the most destructive of ways, such as chewing up a favorite rug or piece of furniture.br /
br /
Excess energy is often mistaken for separation anxiety, since results are often the same. If you think that excess amounts of energy may be the problem, try giving your dog more exercise to see if that eliminates the problem.br /
br /
If separation anxiety is truly the problem, it is important to address the root causes of that anxiety. In order to prevent separation anxiety from occurring, it is important for the dog to feel happy, safe, secure and comfortable while the owner is away for the day. It is important, for instance, to give the dog plenty of things to keep it busy while you are away. This means providing it with lots of toys, such as balls or chew toys. A pet companion is often effective at relieving separation anxiety as well. Giving the dog a playmate, such as another dog or a cat, is a great way for busy pet parents and pets alike to cope with the stress of being left alone.br /
br /
Setting aside scheduled play times, during which the pet is given your undivided attention, is another great way to alleviate boredom and separation anxiety. Playing with the dog, and providing it with sufficient attention and exercise, is a proven way to avoid a stressed and anxious dog. A happy dog that has been well exercised and well conditioned will generally sleep the day away happily and patiently wait for the return of its owner.br /
br /
It is important to schedule one of these daily play sessions before you leave the house each day. It is important to give the dog a few minutes to settle down after playtime before you leave.br /
br /
For dogs that are already experiencing separation anxiety and associated misbehaviors, it is important to get him accustomed to your leaving gradually. Be sure to practice leaving and returning at irregular intervals, several times during the day. Doing so will get your dog accustomed to your deparartures and help him realize that you are not leaving him forever. Dogs that have been previously lost, or those that have been surrendered to shelters and readopted, often have the worst problems with separation anxiety. Part of treating this problem is teaching the dog that your leaving is not permanent.br /

Traveling with dogs by auto can be fun or stressful. It all depends on your organizational abilities, flexibility and sense of humor. Traveling by car is probably the easiest way to go when you decide to take your dog along. You can decide how you want to accommodate him.

This is an exciting event for many dogs, so expect your puppy to be hyped and ready to go.

There are of course considerations to plan for when taking your best friend safety, sleeping arrangements (his best dog bed), food, as well as additional aides and supplies to pack.

Dog Traveling

Things to do Before leaving on a Auto Trip with Your Dog

Have your pet washed and groomed, this will keep dog odor and shedding to a minimum. Your dog will be going in and out of the car so the use of a dog car seat cover is ideal to keep your seats clean. and free from soiling. Bring a watertight bowl, food and snacks. Pack some security toys, and a ball or Frisbee for playing at parks. Update your ID tag, license and vaccinations.

A travel crate that folds and/or a comfortable dog bed or blanket that smells of home are ideal when you arrive at your destination. The crate will allow you to leave your dog alone if need be unless your dog is predisposed to barking, accidents, or separation anxiety.

If travel sickness is a problem, discuss the possibility of medication with your vet.

While traveling with dogs in a vehicle your dog should be secured. There are several options, a dog crate, a dog car barrier, a dog car seat, seat belt or harness. Crates are a cozy, comfortable place for your dogs to travel but it does require your pup to be separated from you during the trip which may change the experience for you and your dog. This is also true with a car barrier with a nice padded bed, again your pet is separated from the family. There are plenty of comfortable and safe car seats, seat belts and harnesses on the market to accommodate your buddy which will allow your doggy to sit, stand, lie down and look at the view. The method you choose will also depend on the size of your dog and the type of vehicle you are traveling in.

While Traveling with Dogs Do Not…

(1) Allow your dog to hang his head out the window while you are driving. As much joy as he finds from this activity, it is too easy for flying debris to injure and an eye or ear or worse yet your pet could fall out the window.

(2) Have your dog in the front where air bags could cause your dog injury; the back seat is the best place for him.

(3) Never leave your dog alone in a hot car, even for a minute.

Do…

(1) Stop every 2 hours to stretch a little, food (not too much), to relieve himself and a drink of water.

(2) Have your doggy on a leash if you stop at a busy area or where he could get away or lost.

(3) Have a collar and ID tag on your dog at all times.

Traveling with dogs is an experience that can bring pleasure to the entire family. Have fun!
