Pedigree dogs were bred for selected purposes such as hunting, guarding and herding animals. Therefore specific traits were bred into each breed to suit the purpose they were required for. However it wasn’t until the late 1950’s when pedigree dogs became popular to show. The first official dog show was in 1959 and the UK Kennel Club now recognizes over 200 breeds, and over 400 breeds are recognized worldwide.

There are six breed groups in which all pedigree dogs are divided into:

Pedigree Terrier Puppy

• Hounds (including Dachshunds).
• Terriers (including West Highland Terriers and Yorkshire Terriers).
• Working (including Boxers and German Shepherds).
• Gundog (including Golden and Labrador Retrievers).
• Utility (including Bulldogs and Dalmatians).
• Toy (including Chihuahuas and Pugs).

As each breed has different requirements and vary in size, choosing what pet food to buy can be frustrating and requires much thought and decision, especially as there are so many different types of food available. However Royal Canin has a Breed Health Nutrition range of dog food that has been developed and tailored to suit each breeds’ individual needs and sensitivities. These foods have been formulated based on research conducted on the specific needs and feeding behaviours of the breeds’ individual characteristics. They are of various shapes and sizes depending on the feeding habits of the breed and to suit the jaws and teeth of the breed, as some will pick up their food with their teeth and others with their lips or tongue.

Your dog’s first impressions of a food are always important and food must always be presented in a manner which is appropriate to the size of the animal. Many of the foods are also available for the different life stages including junior, as it is very important you feed your dog a diet suited to their life stage as puppies have different requirements to adult and older dogs. Viovet offer all of these foods where they can also be viewed and compared.

Royan Canin’s foods are also designed for the breed’s general energy requirements as caution must be taken as certain dog breeds are more prone to obesity, including; English Bulldogs, Dachshunds, Pugs, Dalmatians and Cocker Spaniels. Obesity is one of the most common health disorders and is frequently ignored. However it can cause other health problems such as diabetes, breathing problems, arthritis, heart disease (and in extreme cases heart failure).

As an end note, when switching your dog’s food it is important to do it gradually to ensure you do not upset their stomach while also allowing your dog to become accustomed to the new taste and texture. Feed a little of the new food each day mixed with their current food, gradually increasing the amount.

Choosing a premium dog food over a cheaper brand is already a step in the right direction for your dog’s health and happiness. Most high end dog foods use top quality ingredients and provide vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants and other beneficial food stuffs in order to keep allergy, muscle, joint and digestive problems at bay. But choosing the right premium dog food from the broad selection available is very important and will depend on the age, breed and physiological condition (i.e. level of exercise and other factors such as breeding) of your pet.

Burns Dog Food have created a formula for working dogs that realises a flaw in the recipe of common working dog foods. Where traditional foods for working dogs focus on high protein and fat in order to provide enough energy for high physical activity, Burns Alert Canine is designed to provide working dogs with high mental energy levels. Working dogs – guide, police and therapy dogs for example – can be physically inactive for prolonged periods. They will need limited protein and fat levels instead otherwise they will struggle to digest the food and it may result in weight problems.

Royal Canin Dog Food provides a very extensive range of foods that cover a variety of dog types. They produce breed-specific foods that take into account nutritional requirements and the particular way each breed uses it mouth to pick up its food. For example, Royal Canin Pug 25 dog food is designed to be easily gripped by the mouth as Pugs have a very short, broad skull structure, and also contains vitamins and minerals to prevent muscle strain – a common problem in Pugs.

Arden Grange dog food has developed its Prestige dog food as a rich in chicken recipe that is high in protein for working dogs and show dogs. It is also very palatable for fussy eaters. Many brands also provide foods for mothers (whether pregnant, lactating or weaning) and puppies of varying sizes.

Choose a pet stroller

When you’re contemplating buying a pet stroller there are quite a few points to think about. Picking out the pet stroller that is good for your needs, and your pet is key to really using and enjoying your pet stroller. Let’s have a look at some of the things to look at when making this purchase.

Size:

How large is your pooch. This is a crucial measurement. If your dog is too large for the stroller you choose he won’t fit, or will not have that much room to be comfortable. If your pet isn’t comfortable in the stroller he’s not going to want to travel in it. It won’t be a relaxing thing for him to do, and it can lead to safety issues. If your pet isn’t confident in his stroller he may try to jump out. If he jumps out while you’re going for walks it could be hazardous for him.

Be sure that the stroller you select is not just big enough to fit your dog, but sufficient for him to have a little bit of space to move around and lie down in.

Conversely if you get a stroller that is too big for your pooch it can be just as disagreeable for them. Thumping around in a big space can be intimidating for a little dog. It can allow them to get banged and jostled as you are on your way, and that can be risky.

So make certain you get the specifications of the stroller you’re choosing and ensure your pet will fit easily in the measurement. Something you need to take note of when gathering the measurements it to be sure that you get the internal measurements. You want to get the measurements for the area your dog will be relaxing in, not the overall measurements for the whole stroller.

Your Purpose:

What is it you would like to do with your canine in your stroller? Are you going to just walk around the block on a inviting evening? Is your family very lively, do you want to take your furry friend with you when you go exercising or even when you go out on a family bike ride? Do you want to take your dog stroller camping out with you? These are questions you need to ask because the answers will make a sizable difference in the type of stroller you should get.

If you’re just going out for a peaceful jaunt one of the classic four wheeled pink pet strollers might be excellent for you. If you’re going to be jogging, or going off road a three wheeled jogging stroller might be a better fit. If you’re going to be going on bike rides you’ll definitely need a pet bik trailer. If you choose one of the pet bike trailers you might want to check and see if the stroller you choose comes with a conversion kit to turn it into a jogging stroller, or if you’ll have to purchase one separately. There are bike pet trailers that include the conversion kit, so if that’s important to you, make sure you find one where it is included.

I trust these guidelines will help you consider a pet stroller that will work delightfully for you and your pet. Letting your pet to get outdoors and be part of family activities is a wonderful way to say you love them.

Collars come in a wide variety of styles, colors, and materials. The two common types of collars are training collars and buckle collars.

The purpose of a training collar is for you to be able to guide your dog or to check your dog if necessary. (A check is a tug on the leash followed by an immediate release of tension on the leash.) A check is used when you want your dog to stop doing something. However, the check is a form of negative reinforcement and an unpleasant experience for any dog.

Buckle collars

Collars for the trained dog are called buckle collars. They are either leather, nylon, or canvas. For the untrained dog, buckle collars are virtually useless. Trying to control a dog with a buckle collar would be difficult. Some dog owners prefer to use a harness, which is perfectly fine for dogs that do not pull or for small dogs, where pulling is not terribly objectionable. But for a medium-sized or large dog that pulls, harnesses are not a good idea because you give up the control that you are trying to achieve. The dog literally leans into the harness and drags you wherever he wants to go. The only exception for using a harness on an untrained dog is if the dog has a neck injury.

The importance of choosing the right dog collar

If you are a dog owner then you understand the importance of choosing the right dog collar. There are many dog collars choices available in a variety of styles and materials. The right one for you and your pet will depend greatly on your specific needs. Dog collars serve many purposes from identification, training, or to simply look good.

Leather and nylon dog collars are the more traditional choices available, with leather being the most durable and long lasting, they also tend to be more expensive than nylon, and may not be the most economical choice for that growing pup. Nylon is lightweight, breathable and usually washable. If your furry friend will be wearing a collar at all times or if you have a smaller dog you might opt for a nylon collar for comfort. Eco-friendly dog collars have also become quite popular in recent years in choices of materials like hemp, bamboo and recycled plastic. Easy to clean and stink proof may sound pretty appealing, nylon dog collars coated in polyurethane do not absorb liquids or odors and wipe clean are a great option.

English Bulldog dog collar

Another important variation is the closure style. Buckle types are strong and dependable, but if you attach and remove a dog collar often then the snap closure is best for you. While harnesses usually offer a level of comfort for most dogs, they are usually a better choice for smaller dogs. A harness offers less control and this is worth considering if you have a larger dog that might pull hard or run. Velcro closures are another option but again would be best for “toy” or miniature dogs because of the greater likelihood of undoing. Slip or “choke” dog collars are primarily used for training purposes and if not used appropriately can cause trauma and be considered abusive. Choke dog collars should never be used on puppies. When using any training collar or tool be sure and seek professional instruction as to the use of these tools. Limited slip collars are also available; they serve basically the same training purposes as a slip collar but are designed to stop tightening before constricting the dog’s neck.

Maybe your posh pup is a bit more high maintenance. There are fashion dog collars to suit all types and imaginations. Adornments such as flowers, beads and rhinestones can turn a practical plain dog collar into the perfect canine accessory. Novelty prints can be found to make any type statement you wish, whether to brag on your “Princess Pooch” or warn others to “Beware of the Bulldog”. Lighted dog collars can be cute but also come in handy if you are headed out on a weekend camping trip or maybe just a nightly walk to make sure your best friend doesn’t get lost.

No matter what type of dog collar you choose be sure to keep you and your dog’s safety and comfort in mind.

Your dog can benefit from sporting a Secure Dog Coat as it can provide them with extra warmth and your dog will also have with extra protection from the rain and when you take then for walks through the bush from the scraps and grazes from outlying bushes. If your Dog is an active outdoor dog then buying a protective Dog Coat for them is one of the best decisions you can make.

One thing that you need to remember though is that not all Dog Coats are created equal. Coats differ greatly in terms of quality both in regards to the material they are made from and also in terms of the way they fit your dog.

First of all you need to ensure that the coat that you purchase is the right size. If the coat is too small your Dog will likely find it uncomfortable and if it’s too tight then the coat may not fit at all. As dogs have a tendency to get themselves into a wide range of situations you also don’t want a coat that has any loose ends as your dog could get tangled up. To get the perfect measurements for the coat, measure the distance from the base of the dogs neck to the base of the tail. If in doubt always go a size up and ensure that you leave a little bit of room if you expect your dog to grow.

Another point of consideration is too ensure that the Dog Coat is water resistant. A waterproof Dog Coat will keep your dogs fur dry on wet days and also from wet and dew covered bushes and grass.

You should also look for your Dog Coat to have practical features such as openings for harness leashes, quick adjustment closures, and enough room for your pooch to relieve himself without making a mess.

My recommendation for the perfect coat is the Ultimate 2-in-1 Four Seasons Performance Dog Coat. In the colder months the coat has a removable polar fleece lining for extra winter warmth and the warmers months the coat has a waterproof/breathable outer coat.

The Ultimate 2-in-1 Performance Dog Coat is a unique design, featuring an innovative concept, which produces total adaptability to the weather. For colder months, the polar fleece lining provides the comfort and warmth to protect against the cold. As the weather improves, the fleece lining can be removed, leaving a lightweight, waterproof and breathable jacket to combat the vagaries of the British weather.

The Four Seasons 2-in-1 also features full chest protection, light reflective beading and light reflective central fastening straps for extra safety at night, as well as easy Velcro fastening.
So if you are looking for a dog coat for your dog make sure that you measure your dog before you shop and get a well-fitting dog coat that’ll keep your dog safe and warm!

Feed your dog top quality dog food

Did you know that most food that is fed to dogs today has extremely low nutritional content? If you feed your dog commercial dog food, you may be slowly killing your dog. Perhaps you think this is a little dramatic? Think again. If humans are fed a diet of unhealthy foods, they probably wont show any adverse signs for quite some time. But fed over many years, people will become sluggish, sick, and eventually die from degenerative diseases much earlier than they would otherwise pass from this life.

The same goes for dogs.

Dog feed

All commercial dog food which is extruded (cooked) at very high temperatures cannot be anything but bad for our dogs, whose natural diet in the wild is mainly fresh, raw meat. Even after dogs became domesticated, and then kept as pets, for decades they were fed home cooked food and table scraps, before anyone thought of commercializing dog food and selling cans of mush, or pieces of highly questionable biscuit-looking food called kibble.

Dogs used to live longer than they do now.

Examine baked and kibbled foods for the presence of burned spots on the biscuits. The presence of large numbers of burned biscuits indicates that the food has been cooked at such high temperatures that the nutrients are likely to be almost non-existent.

On the other hand, if dry products are damp, soft or stale, it means that they have been improperly processed, become damp in transit, become damp during storage, or that they are old.

Dry products that become damp quickly deteriorate from the action of mold and eventually bacteria. Sometimes the only indication that mold is beginning to attack a dry food is the musty odor smelled when a bag is opened. At other times it may be seen as a white, hairy beard or a bluish-green or black velvety coating over the food. Any food found to be moldy should be destroyed immediately and never fed to dogs.

Does any of this sound like food you would eat yourself?

If not, then even though its labelled as dog food and could possibly have some form of nutritional content (if you’re lucky), why feed such substandard rubbish to your dog? It really can be harmful over the long term. Why else do you think so many dogs suffer from degenerative diseases like heart disease, cancer, kidney failure, and more? These diseases were previously unknown in companion animals. Now they’re commonplace. And the increase in incidence of these degenerative diseases in dogs and other animals has occurred in direct proportion to the practice of giving pets raw food or table scraps, to giving them commercial pet food.

The answer?

Feed your dog a raw, or primarily raw, fresh food diet. The large part of the food should, of course, be meat. If you’re not a fan of raw food, then by all means give your dog home cooked food, made from premium ingredients which you would use for your own food. Of course, you can give your dog all the fat and offcuts from the meat that you don’t want. Dogs need some fat (unlike us!)

And if you really need the convenience of a pre-prepared dog food, then go for a top quality dog food – NOT one of the commercial brands found on your supermarket, or even pet store shelves. Even many vets have no idea about correct animal nutrition, believe it or not, and promote commercial dog foods that are peddled to them as premium food, when they’re nothing of the kind.

How do you know what a superior quality dog food is? Check for both the ingredients and the method of cooking. The ingredients should be primarily meat – not meat byproducts, a small proportion only of grains of all types, and preferably some fresh vegetables, fruit or herbs. As for the cooking method – the lower the heat, the better. Don’t go for anything that has been extruded (which is most kibble), or canned at high temperatures. If the method of cooking is not stated, then make further inquiries of the manufacturer, or go for one that does state the cooking method – freeze dried or baked are acceptable.

Dog fleas treatment

All dogs pick up fleas, ticks, and chiggers at one time or another, usually during the warm weather months. Even a pampered city pet can pick up a stray flea from a potted plant. Hunting dogs often return home with a collection of chiggers or ticks. Fleas hop from one dog to another with amazing speed and agility. Your pet only needs to greet one flea infested friend in order to acquire the beginning of a flea colony of his own.

External parasites are not a special affliction of dogs. The dog is simply a convenient host for them. We would probably have them too, if our bodies were covered with hair and we ran around without shoes and clothing and sat or slept on the ground. Fleas are the most common, the easiest to detect and to get rid of. Fleas appear as black specks on a fine tooth comb, and a single one can drive a dog crazy.

The worst part of fleas is that they act as hosts to tapeworm larvae, and if your dog swallows one you may end up with a worm problem too. You can trap fleas in a silky smooth coat with a flea comb, but fleas that nestle in the dense undercoat of double coated dogs must be treated with a product that penetrates the skin, and a regular mild treatment is safer than an occasional severe one.

Dog fleas treatment

In one day a single flea can bite your pet 400 times, while consuming more than its own body weight in blood. Some dogs can contract flea allergy dermatitis, an allergic reaction to the flea’s saliva. The severity and length of the flea season varies depending on what part of the country you live in, but it is best to treat your pet in early spring, (April – May). In northern climates, flea and tick season usually lasts approximately 4 months, but in the extreme south, fleas can live all year long.

There are more than 2000 species of fleas in the United States alone, but the one that attacks most pets is the cat flea, Ctenocephalides Felis. A cat flea can lay up to one egg per hour, and within two days, a wormlike larvae will hatch from those eggs. The eggs are oval, smooth, and about 0.5mm in size. The hatched larvae will range from 1.5 to 5mm in length. The complete cycle from egg to adult takes approximately 30 to 75 days depending on temperature and humidity.

Adult fleas are about 1/16 to 1/8 inch long, are dark reddish brown, wingless, hard bodied, have three pairs of legs and are flattened from side to side. Fleas can jump vertically up to seven inches, and horizontally up to fourteen inches. They have piercing – sucking mouth parts and spines on their body. Adult fleas cannot survive or lay eggs without a blood meal, but may live from two months to one year without feeding.

In order to effectively control an infestation, fleas must be removed from the pet, the home, and the yard. Starting with the pet, there are shampoos, topical treatments, sprays, collars, and oral medications. The least recommended is shampoo, due to the grooming the pet does to his own coat. The pesticides can be toxic if they are consumed in quantity. Topical treatments are better, along with sprays and collars, but the best and most recommended is the oral medication Lufenuron called “Program” from your veterinarian.

To clean the home, all areas frequented by the dog should be cleaned thoroughly by vacuuming, washing bedding and rugs and possible treatment by insecticides. Treating your carpet with a Borate powder such as “Borax” laundry powder works as a poison upon ingestion by the flea, simply sprinkle the powder on your carpets and leave it for a few h ours before vacuuming will rid most homes of their fleas. A second treatment can follow if necessary. It’s cheap, you can do it yourself and there are no insecticides used.

To treat the lawn and around the homes exterior, pyrethroids such as “Archer” or “Nylan”, as well as fenoxy carb such as “Logic” or “Torus” can be effective. Outdoor treatment is usually only done in extreme or severe cases of flea infestation and may not be necessary. You should however keep your lawn trimmed to create a drier, less ideal environment for flea larvae. If you don’t want to handle the pesticides yourself, any licensed professional pest control operator can do the treatment for you.

In summary, you should check with your veterinarian before using any form of flea treatment. Never use products for dogs on a cat, as cats are more sensitive to the pesticide and they groom themselves more thoroughly. Never apply pesticides to young, pregnant, or sick animals, and use alternative methods to control fleas, such as combing frequently with a flea comb, vacuum your home frequently and dispose of the vacuum bag, wash all pet bedding regularly, and bathe your pet with a pesticide free shampoo. Prevention is much easier than dealing with an infestation.

As with most pedigree breeds, there are certain hereditary conditions that can be a problem in the German Shepherd as well as other health issues that are more prevalent in this breed which need to be considered if you are thinking acquiring a GSD.br /
br /
If you are buying a German Shepherd puppy it is important to ensure that you only purchase a healthy dog from a reputable breeder and a good idea would be to contact the breed council who should be able to provide you with a list of such breeders. Most reputable breeders don’t need to advertise but if they do they tend not to use free papers or other general advertising media but will usually place their advert in a specialist dog magazine or paper. The Kennel Club will provide a list of breeders but this does not signify that they are reputable only that they register their puppies with the KC.br /
br /
There are a number of common conditions seen in this breed, some of which have a better prognosis than others but all of which are expensive to treat – so insure your German Shepherd Dog as soon as you get it.br /
br /
Inherited conditions such as hip dysplasia are becoming more common largely because of irresponsible breeding so you should look for a puppy whose parents are both hip scored and the lower the score the better – ideally less than ten. This is a distressing and painful condition for a GSD as well as the costs for treating being prohibitive if the animal is not insured. Elbow dysplasia is also a common hereditary condition.br /
br /
Bloat or gastric torsion is a real emergency and a life threatening condition, which has become more common in deep chested dogs over the years. Experts are divided but good tips for reducing the risk are that it is best to feed 2 small meals rather than one large meal a day and to avoid feeding your GSD before strenuous exercise.br /
br /
Anal furunculosis is a distressing auto immune condition which can be controlled with expensive drugs for a while but will inevitably progress as is the condition CDRM which is a degenerative disease which will ultimately lead to the loss of use of the dogs back legs and then bowel/urinary incontinence.br /
br /
For whatever reason there seems to be an increasing number of GSD’s suffering from PI – pancreatic insufficiency, which presents as chronic watery diarrhoea and failure to thrive. This condition is treatable with expensive pancreatic enzymes and a low fat diet but the regime must be strictly adhered to.br /
br /
Epilepsy is also more common these days and although it can be controlled by drugs, usually tolerance eventually occurs which will often result in the loss of control of the fits and the likelihood of brain damage as a result of prolonged uncontrolled fitting.br /
br /
To protect your new puppy and in order to try to minimise long term or future health problems, it is vital that a high quality feeding regime is adopted from the start. German shepherds often have digestive problems so it is important to find a quality food that your dog likes and one that doesn’t upset the digestion. If in doubt ask your vet for advice or contact German Shepherd Rescue UK.br /
