Making the decision of getting a dog to include in your family is always a good one. Indeed, choosing the right dog can bring many years of love and loyal companionship, especially for the children in a family. However, choosing just the right breed of dog is an important part of getting the puppy you can have this long lasting relationship with. Check out these tips for choosing the best dog breeds for families.

Parents should never leave smaller children alone with a dog or any other type of pet. This is a recipe for disaster and has led to great injury for both animals and children. Make sure you always supervise smaller children while they are around a new dog and take advantage of this time to teach them how to best treat a pet. Take your time and do a little every day in teaching your children and your pet to be good to one another. Do a pet insurance comparison up front to see how much vet bills are likely to run for the breed you’re thinking of. There are many pet insurance plans to choose from.

Dog breeds chart comparing breeds

Your family may do well with a large breed dog as opposed to a smaller breed. However, make certain you have enough space for a larger breed. The Golden Retriever is a perfect choice for those families with children. They are smart and are easily trained. Many families have made this dog the most popular breed for the family pet because of these reasons.

Labrador Puppy

Another great dog for the family with kids is a Labrador. These dogs love to play and have plenty of energy for doing so which is the greatest reason to choose this breed for kids. Labs are loyal and loving companions and love to cuddle as much as they love to run and play fetch. They are easily maintained as far as grooming goes and are always ready to please.

The family that lives in an area that provides plenty of room might consider the Great Pyreneesas their breed of dog. These are gentle giants and are known for their protective personalities. This is in addition to being loving and smart dogs as well. If you are thinking about adopting this breed, remember they do require daily grooming and maintain a large diet.

Great Pyrenees

If a larger breed is not a good choice for your family and the lifestyle you lead, you might consider the Pembroke Welsh Corgi. These are medium animals with a possessive personality, so choose this breed if your children are at least ten years old. They make excellent playmates, however, for the kid that understands how to treat dogs.

Pembroke Welsh Corgi Puppy

Boston Terriers and Basset Hounds also make great family pets. Both of these dogs make great playmates and are fiercely loyal to their family. Making the choice for either of these breeds is a great one. You might also consider a beagle for a wonderful family dog as well.

How you care for your canine will decide how your canine cares for you. The dogs that are treated fairly and loved are the dogs that give back the greatest companionship and loyalty. This is one thing parents need to instill in their children when they are thinking about getting one of the best dog breeds for families.

Are you ready to introduce a new member to your family? If so, dogs are great for this! Whether you choose a small or large, black or tan, curly or straight haired dog, they are all cute and unique in their own way.

Now, besides getting all the necessary supplies they need, dogs need a name that fits them well. What are some things you should consider before permanently naming them?

Tips for Choosing Your New Dog’s Name

Browse female and male names

Whether you have a male or female puppy, you’ll want to browse some of the names there are to choose from. Whether you search books at the library, come up with them yourself or you search online, there are several great names for each gender. This at least cuts your searching in half.

Choosing a Dog Name

Come up with a name that means something

You may want to name your dog by choosing a name that has a meaning. For example, if you and your new spouse just moved to a new state, you could name the dog something that has meaning to you two with your new experience together. For example, the dogs name could be “journey” because it’s a new journey for you two, it could be the city you live in, anything really.

Impression

When you look at your dog, what is the first impression you get from them? Whether they’re playful, quiet or yappy, you could turn your dog’s name into something that resembles their personality or first impression. For example, if you have a dog that’s sort of lazy and not too energetic, you could call them “Pokie.” Now, if you have a dog that’s always bouncing off the walls, you could name them “Taz.” There are so many first impressions dogs can give and so many great names to go along with their personality.

Most popular ones to consider

If you search dog names online, you will find thousands, if not hundreds of names to choose from. Some are more popular than others, and some are a lot more common. Between those popular names such as, “Laci”, “Bailey” or names like “Rover”, there are many popular names that you may want to consider. These names are great if you can’t think of a certain meaning for the dog or if you never really got a certain first impression from your dog. These names are popular for a reason and may fit your dog’s looks, as well as personality very nicely.

Popular dog names

Some example popular dog names is “Buddy” for male dog which means good friend, “Mambo” a Latin America word for male dog which means voodoo priestess, “Sam”, “Sammie” or “Samantha” (which means “listener”), “Diana” a name for female dogs which means divine, heavenly, “Max”, “Maxie”, “Maxwel”l or “Maxine” a Latin word which means “the greatest”, “Hesper” a male dog name which means “evening star” a Greek word. Other very popular dog names in North America are Lady, followed by Bear, Maggie, Buddy, Tasha, Chelsea (or Chelsie), Holly and Shasta Brandy, Ginger and Taffy.

As you can see, there is quite a bit to think about when it comes to choosing your new dog’s name. You want something that just sort of “fits” them and their personality and you want something that everyone can agree on. Before you rush into any old name, be sure to think about it for a while, as this name will be forever with them and your family!

What’s your favorite dog name…?

Lots of people all over the world are dreaming about a pet. In most cases they prefer a puppy. Puppies are cute and merry. They help their master to leave the problems away and have a little rest. It is the common practice to spend time together with the animals for it is not only interesting and fascinating but also good for your health. There are the special domains of medicine dealing with the puppies. Though the one with the horses is more popular, treating the dogs is also considered useful for people’s health. Thus, you can buy a puppy to improve your health along with your mood. Moreover, your kids will be happy if you tell them that you are going to buy the puppy. In some cases you might need the special preparation. For this reason it would be better to study all available information about the puppies.

Bulldog

The good idea is to start reading from the books about breeds. The matter is that the dog’s breed determines lots of other factors. It influences the puppy’s appearance, physical peculiarities and even the character. Therefore, it would be wise to think carefully about the breed so that all members of your family were satisfied with this decision. If some of them don’t like the puppy, it is very bad. The puppy is a living creature. When you buy him, you take the responsibility dealing with this animal. Correspondingly, you are the one who is supposed to feed him, take care of him and protect from the others who might be willing to hurt him. Vice versa, the puppy will become the guard of your family and home as soon as he grows up. If you want to get the guard, it might be wise to think about the aggressive breed. The dogs of such breeds are the good friends for the master and his family. At the same time they can protect you and your lodging from the criminals who want to rob you or to steal something from your home, for example.

Note that the puppies of aggressive breeds need the special dog training so that no one got hurt because of your dog. It is very important in order to prevent the accidents. The well-bred dog is the reason to be proud. The training schools are very different. It is up to you to choose the one with the best trainers for the dog of your breed. These schools differ according to the breeds and the facilities available for training. You can select one according to the set of criteria you work out yourself. But it is always worth mentioning that the best training is the one you provide yourself.

Things to do before you bring the puppy home

Lots of families from different countries of the world are willing to have a pet. In most cases the kids ask their parents about them. But not all parents are ready to satisfy this desire. The main reason is that they don’t believe that their kids will perform all necessary duties dealing with the pet. In most cases they choose a puppy as the pet. Anyway, there are many things to do and prepare before you bring the puppy home. If you have decided to buy the puppy, it would be great to discuss it with your kids first. Explain them that you won’t agree unless they do the required work. Thus, the first preparation stage is dividing the duties within the family. It is obvious that not all issues can be solved by your children. They can feed the puppy, take him out for a walk and do lots of other work. However, it is very likely that you will be the one to bring puppy to the veterinary clinics, for example. It happens not very often though you should do it on the regular basis. Actually, it is up to you to solve this question.

Yorkshire Terrier puppy

Depending on the breed it might be also necessary to bring the puppy to the training school. Some breeds might be aggressive and therefore dangerous to the other people. For this reason it is essential to provide the proper training for them. It will make treating with the dog safer both for the common people and for the family members. Correspondingly, this is one more duty to include in the list. In reality, it is not that difficult to take the dog to the training school and your kids can cope with it without any difficulties.

The next step is to choose the breed you will look for and the place to buy the puppy. The breed determines both the physical peculiarities and the character of the puppy. For this reason you should also remember about the character of the family members so that all of them could get used and get along with the dog properly. It is not that easy to make the right choice. You should also remember about your living conditions. They might influence on the fact whether the dog will get everything necessary in your family. For example, some breeds need the everyday walks in the forest or park. Think carefully, whether you can satisfy all the needs and cope with all occurring problems.

In any case your children will be very happy when you bring the puppy home. He will become the great friend for them and you will see how glad they are because you made their dream come true.

Buy a puppy, are you ready to take this responsibility?

Kids in many families want to have a pet. They often ask their parents to buy him a puppy but many grown-up people are not ready to take this responsibility. However, it is not that difficult as you might think. It is necessary to do the proper preparation and correspondingly, you will be sure that all members of the family realize the responsibility and their duties. The main thing is to explain what everyone has to do. Your kids must know when they are going to perform the definite activity dealing with the animal. The same is true for the grown-ups. There are many things to do in regard to the dog. All of them are very important as you are in charge of the tamed animal.

Puppy dog Beagle

Some things to consider before buy a puppy

When you come to the idea to buy the puppy, there are some things to consider. The first one is the breed. Note that your living conditions are not suitable for all existing breeds. Thus, you have to find out what dogs can live in your house or near it. Then you should decide what properties and peculiarities are important for your dog. These are not only physical properties and appearance but also character. The character of the dog determines whether all your family members will manage to get along with the puppy. It is essential that the dog brings pleasure not only to kids but to everyone who lives in your house.

The second step is to decide where you will buy the puppy. This may be the pet-shop, cynology club, veterinary clinics or the single specialist in dog breeding. It is up to you to make the choice. In any case it would be good to know that your dog is healthy. It means that you have to find out whether the seller provides you with all documents including those about the puppy’s health. Perhaps, buying the dog in veterinary clinics is a good idea.

Taking the dog to the veterinary is very important. This is the guarantee that your puppy is healthy and won’t do any harm to your kids and other family members. The proper health is also needed for training. The trained puppies are well-bred.

Those referring to the dangerous breeds require training in any case. The training school is the guarantee that the dog will not threaten to the surrounding people to say nothing about those living in your house. It would be good to know that the specialists in the training school are keen on the training activities. It is the wise idea to ask them about the relevant documents. The feedback from other customers of the training school is also worth paying attention to. Anyway, the puppy will bring you lots of pleasant minutes!

Many people are fond of pets, especially dogs. But it is not that simple to groom a puppy and you need to know many things like yorkie diets. Luckily online network today gives us a fantastic opportunity to look for anything we need. For example visit this yorkie grooming site – this is a very place on the web where one learn volumes of details about grooming yorkie puppies including how to potty train my yorkie.

Dog breed right fit for your family

Pets can be a wonderful addition to a family, as long as you find the right fit. Dogs come in many breeds, and all have their charms as well as their drawbacks. Finding out which dog breed is a right fit for your family and its lifestyle is very important. The wrong dog can create tension, destruction and eventually end up in a shelter, which are already overcrowded as it is.

First, you should consider whether or not you want a purebred, or mixed breed animal. Families should be encouraged to check their local animal shelters for a mixed breed dog to adopt, before they shell out large amounts of money for a purebred dog. Adopting from a shelter will save the life of a dog that would otherwise end up euthanized.

Second, consider the size of your home and the amount of energy that you have to spend with a dog. Large breed puppies can be very exuberant and are occasionally very clumsy. Improperly trained, these puppies can also be very damaging to your home, so you might want to consider crating.

Bichon Frise

Next, how social is your family? If you are always coming and going then you will need a dog that does not mind a little alone time. Remember though, dogs, no matter how independent, they do need some interaction or they will develop behavioral issues. If you do not have any time at all to spare, skip the dog.

After figuring out the basic size and social needs of a potential dog, you will need to figure out the general temperament of the breed as well as their individual needs. Some dogs need minimal grooming for instance, while others need to see the doggy beautician more often than a pageant contestant. If girly frou-frou is not for you, skip the poodles, the Afghans and the other high maintenance puppy dogs. Some are shedders, but that can be minimized with frequent brushing. (Some dogs will actually let you run the upholstery attachment of your vacuum over them, but many will not.) Energetic families need energetic doggies, and laid-back people need laid-back pups. Make sure that the dog you are looking at will be happy in your home. Read up on the breed you are interested in and rate the level of potential fit. This is a long-term commitment we are talking about so don’t just fall for the first pair of big brown eyes that bat at you.

Finally, remember, no one dog is always going to be the perfect representative of their breed all of the time. Do not get stuck on the accepted stereotype of the breed, and never get a pet sight unseen. Interact with your potential puppy and spend some real time with him. Make sure that all family members get a chance to meet the dog, and vice versa. Hopefully it is a tail wagging, love at first sight connection for everybody.

Find a good companion dog that fits your personality

If your kids are thinking of a good companion dog, you probably would tend to first look at just look at a few of your favorite breeds, choose a good selection of puppies and then pick the one with the best spirit. And there are hundreds of breeds to choose from – just think of the Bluetick Coonhound and the Toy Poodle. But, you would be better served to find dog that fits your personality. Seek a pet that has the qualities that you had in mind and can bond with you. Age is not really a concern most of the time. Breeds may have a certain reputation, but there are no hard, fast rules. These tips, though, can guarantee that you will find a good companion dog.

Find a dog that has a personality that fits your own personality and your experience. If you have experience with more independent dogs, then a more dominant, independent dog may work for you. However, if you are not aggressive or not acquainted with working with a dog, a more submissive animal may be a better choice for you. When you are looking at puppies, hold one and turn it over on its back. A dominant dog will fight you, trying to turn over. If it struggles, try to comfort it. If it calms down shortly, it is more submissive. If it does not struggle at all, but just lies there, you have a very submissive dog.

American Eskimo Companion Dog

A dog that is calm and requires little care is better for you if you are more laid back and more sedative yourself. If you have an active life you may find a more active, hyper dog to be more your style. If you are gone much of the time and your dog would be kenneled during that time, you want to find a dog that is a little self reliant and will not suffer from separation anxiety.

You also will want your new companion dog to be intelligent and eager to please. This will make it easy teach it what you want it to know and it will happily learn the skills and perform them. If you are taking your dog out in public, you don’t want a fear nipper or a dog that is aggressive to strangers. Obviously, this will come with effectively socializing the dog on a regular basis, but the quick learning dog will watch you to see who is a possible enemy and who is a friend.

Dogs can be superb companions having the right personality type for your needs. Also, while many folks feel that only young dogs can be trained, this is false. Many older dogs are rescued from shelters daily and they are trained quite easily. The key to getting a well behaved companion is bonding with it. When you have bonded with your dog, it will be happy to do what you want. They will learn to anticipate what your needs and will even search for ways to communicate with you. If you are attentive, you and your dog can establish your own special form of communication and this can give you a companion dog even the Arctic Husky or Maltese that is invaluable.

Thinking about buying a dog?

So youve decided to purchase a dog. Owning a dog can be the beginning of years of happiness as the special bond between humans and canines exceeds even the greatest of expectations. However, to ensure the best relationship with your dog, you must be prepared for some important responsibilities. Keep the following questions in mind as we go along.

Have I found the right breed to fit into my lifestyle and home?

Will I have enough time to spend training, grooming and exercising a dog?

Am I willing to spend the resources to ensure the best future for a dog?

The breed for you

Is there a breed you have had your eye on, or are you confused about how to select a dog? In either case, you should do some homework to make sure that you select the right dog for you and your family. The bonus of selecting a purebred dog is their predictability in size, coat, care requirements and temperament. Knowing what your cute puppy will look like and the kind of care he will need as an adult is a key in selecting the breed for you.

Several websites that can help you choose a dog include Pet Nets Select-A-Pet and the Animal Planet Pet Selector.

You and your dog

Too frequently, common sense goes out the window when it comes to buying a puppy. This seems to be even truer when the purchase is by a family with children. Buying a dog is like buying anything else; the more you know before you buy, the better off you will be. This advice applies to all aspects of buying your dog, from selecting the breed to deciding where to obtain the puppy. We strongly recommend that you spend time investigating before buying. Remember, dogs are for life.

Selectapet can help you begin your research with its pictures and descriptions of each breed. Your initial research will help you narrow the field when it comes to selecting the breed for you and your lifestyle. Remember to consider your dogs lifestyle, too. And for extended research, consult the resources at your local library.

While investigating, always be honest with yourself. The Bearded Collie you fell in love with because of his lush coat is indeed beautiful, but are you going to be able to brush this coat every day as it requires? Maybe a short coated dog better suits your busy lifestyle. Think about the size of your house or your apartment.

Will that Golden Retriever be happy in your apartment? The Golden Retriever is a larger working dog who requires a lot of exercise. Do you have a fenced yard so he can go out safely? If not, can you afford to install a fence? These are crucial questions regarding the safety of your dog and being a responsible neighbour.

Always remember, it is okay to change your mind about which breed you want or if you want the responsibility of owning a dog at all. Owning a dog is a big responsibility! Talk to breeders. Ask them lots of questions; we all know there are no stupid questions. A responsible breeder will eagerly answer your questions and share his or her experience and knowledge with you. Where can you find breeders and see dogs? At dog shows (see upcoming Activities and Events). Also contact DOGS Victoria affiliated clubs for their recommendations.

Selecting a breeder

Buy your puppy from a responsible and well-respected breeder. This cannot be stressed enough. Responsible breeders are concerned with the betterment of the breed. For example, they work on breeding healthier dogs with the appropriate temperament for their breed. Your DOGS Victoria breeder referral contact will direct you to a breeder who is concerned with the future of the puppy. Once you select a breeder, screen the breeder. Ask to see at least one of the parents (the dam or the sire) of your puppy. See how the dogs in your breeders home interact with your breeder. Are they friendly and outgoing or do they shy away? The responsible breeder will be screening you, too, looking for the best home for each puppy.

How much does a puppy cost?

This is not the time to hunt for a bargain. Your new puppy will be a member of your family for his lifetime, so youll want to make a wise investment. Ask breeders and breed club members to get a rough idea of prices, but dont make decision on price alone – more expensive isnt necessarily better. Make sure you find the right dog for YOU. And remember, the price of the puppy is just the beginning of the costs.

Can you afford a puppy?

The purchase price of your puppy is not the only cost you have to consider. Be aware that the puppy you bring home will need proper care. Of course, it will need food and health care, (a dog needs annual vaccinations and regular worming treatments). Your puppy will also need little things like a collar with identification, a bowl, and a lead. It will also need to be registered with your local council or shire. Evaluate your budget; ask yourself if you really can afford a dog. Dog Ownership = Responsibility.

Take the time to ask yourself these questions and to make an educated decision. You and your dog will be happier for it. There is no doubt that a puppy is a cuddly bundle of joy, but it is also a huge responsibility.

Caring for your dog

All dogs must be cared for daily. This means proper diet, exercise, grooming and veterinary attention. There are many excellent guides on all facets of dog care. We recommend you have some other authoritative reference source available. Do not attempt to be your own veterinarian! All dogs should be regularly examined by a veterinarian and vaccinated against the major infectious canine diseases.

Your dog and your neighbors

All dog owners must be aware of their responsibilities to their neighbours, both those who live in the area immediately around their residence and their neighbours in the broader sense of the community as a whole. Dogs, for all the pleasure they are, can be a nuisance to your neighbours if not trained. Remember, excessive barking can be annoying. Always keep your dog on a leash or inside a fenced yard when exercising. Remember to pick up after your dog. Forestall problems for yourself and your dog and all dog lovers by being a good neighbour.

Obedience training for everyone

One way to make your dog a good neighbour is through obedience training. A poorly behaved dog is a problem for everyone. Nothing is more frustrating than attempting to catch a dog that will not come when you call. A well trained dog is not only a pleasure to own, he is a goodwill ambassador for the entire canine community. A well-behaved dog is the result of the dogs owner being willing to work with the dog regularly in a systematic manner. Obedience classes are available in most communities (see Obedience Clubs). Time spent training your dog is time well spent.
