Burns Dog Food have created a formula for working dogs that realises a flaw in the recipe of common working dog foods. Where traditional foods for working dogs focus on high protein and fat in order to provide enough energy for high physical activity, Burns Alert Canine is designed to provide working dogs with high mental energy levels. Working dogs – guide, police and therapy dogs for example – can be physically inactive for prolonged periods. They will need limited protein and fat levels instead otherwise they will struggle to digest the food and it may result in weight problems.

Royal Canin Dog Food provides a very extensive range of foods that cover a variety of dog types. They produce breed-specific foods that take into account nutritional requirements and the particular way each breed uses it mouth to pick up its food. For example, Royal Canin Pug 25 dog food is designed to be easily gripped by the mouth as Pugs have a very short, broad skull structure, and also contains vitamins and minerals to prevent muscle strain – a common problem in Pugs.

Arden Grange dog food has developed its Prestige dog food as a rich in chicken recipe that is high in protein for working dogs and show dogs. It is also very palatable for fussy eaters. Many brands also provide foods for mothers (whether pregnant, lactating or weaning) and puppies of varying sizes.

Dog obesity is a major health concern

Obesity is one of the most widespread problems in dogs and has long-term consequences on its health. Obese pets suffer from serious ailments like arthritis, liver problems, heart problems and might also become diabetic. Sadly enough, obesity tends to lead to further overweight problems because once a pet is overweight, his physical activity drops dramatically making it almost impossible to lose weight. Given below are 4 ways in which you can prevent dog obesity.

1. Keep A Watch For Signs Of Obesity

Regular health check-ups and weighing should be enough to spot any weight gain and its associated problems. Obesity is spotted by assessing a dog’s health and its body build conditions. Dogs in a good condition will possess an obviously identifiable waist before its hind limbs when stroked or viewed along the sides. In dogs with a thin-coat it will be possible to feel but unable to see the ribs’ outline. If there is any doubt your vet should be consulted for advice.

2. Portion Control

Obesity sets in when overeating, usually caused by frequent treats and unnecessary foods overshooting the energy that the dog would need normally, thus, leading to accumulation of fat.

3. Consult A Vet

Your vet is best placed to advice you on the diet and exercise regime that needs to be followed in order to help your pet lose weight. Additionally, vet clinics all over the country organize ‘Weight Management Clinics’ in order to help pet owners. On a more do-it-yourself level you can reduce your dog’s daily intake of calories by going for a different dog food product, one that has a specialized calorie control diet with high protein and fibre content.

Prevent Dog Obesity

4. Keep Your Dog Active

The two most effective ways in which you can prevent your dog from getting obese in the first place is by ensuring that:

• The dog gets ample amounts of exercise. If your dog is lazy or unenthusiastic to physical working, then try to entice it with interesting forms of toys. You can easily buy these toys at a cheap dog supplies store. You can try taking him to parks where other dogs play and ensure the fact that you are actively involved in its playtime.
• Try to cut down on the frequency of treating or rewarding the dog with treats and dog candy. Treats, apart from being nutritionally lacking, also might turn your dog into a hog.

A healthy and non-obese dog is a gift to any household in the form of a better playmate, better mannered when it comes to eating habits and who doesn’t want a healthy family member!

Carrie Lyttle is a work-at-home mom and a freelance writer. She loves dogs and currently has a small, adorable poodle. Lyttle is the owner of http://www.costumewigsource.com/, the popular costume and halloween wigs store online.

Obesity in pets is a major health concern and like with humans, can cause many health conditions such as diabetes, breathing problems, hypertension (high blood pressure), arthritis and other joint problems, heart disease (and in extreme cases heart failure). It may also adversely affect an existing health issue. Obesity occurs when dogs are overfed and under-exercised, exceeding their energy requirements, which then promotes the storage of fat. However certain health conditions can also contribute to weight gain, such as hypothyroidism or Cushing’s syndrome. However this would need to be diagnosed by a vet who may prescribe a food specific for the condition, such as the Royal Canin veterinary diets.

Obesity is one of the most common health disorders as it frequently goes unacknowledged, whilst owners are also reluctant to reduce their dog’s calorie intake as they believe it means dramatically reducing their food intake. However providing an ‘obesity diet’ supplies your pet with low calorie food, meaning they can eat the same amount as usual, so you don’t have to worry about them going hungry.

Obesity in dogs

Preventing obesity is key as once your dog becomes obese it is much harder for them to exercise and consequently lose weight. It is important in obesity prevention that the recommended allowance of food (as prescribed on food packaging) is followed and treats are given on occasion. Dog treats that are low in calories are ideal. James Wellbeloved offer a variety of food flavours and tasty treats that are ideal for pets requiring weight management. They are packed with fibre to satisfy hunger and protein which encourages the loss of fat rather than muscle during weight loss.

Caution must also be taken as certain dog breeds are more prone to obesity, including; English Bulldogs, Dachshunds, Pugs, Dalmatians and Cocker Spaniels. Royal Canin dog food has food specifically designed for these breeds. These foods have been formulated based on research conducted on the specific needs and feeding behaviours of the breeds’ individual characteristics.

It is important that you feed your dog a food suited to their life stage and life style, as puppies have different requirements to adult and older dogs. Working dogs will also have a much higher energy requirement than a dog which gets walked once a day, for which a diet low in fat and energy is better, suited to prevent obesity; Royal Canin has a variety of pet food suited to your pet’s lifestyle.

Royal canin puppy food also offers food specially designed for different breeds of puppy. These contain a higher energy requirement as puppies require more energy for growth and their higher activity levels. These foods are of various shapes and sizes depending on the feeding habits of the breed and to suit the jaws and teeth of the breed, as some pick up their food with their teeth and others with their lips or tongue.

Remember, you are being far kinder to your dog feeding them the correct foods than to give them your junk food!

Obesity is becoming a serious problem in the UK. Not only are our waistlines expanding, but so too are those of our pets. Dog obesity is now causing vets real concern, as they see more overweight pets waddling into surgeries with a range of health issues that could easily be avoided if the animal’s dietary requirements had been more closely monitored.

Dog obesity

Certain breeds are prone to obesity – Labradors, spaniels and Golden Retrievers can often become overweight in later years. These active breeds need plenty of exercise as well as a healthy, balanced diet if they are to avoid piling on the pounds. Unfortunately, obesity can lead to some far more serious conditions such as heart disease, joint and respiratory problems (again, just as in humans), so it is important to tackle the signs of obesity as early as possible to ensure your dog has a long, active and happy life.

Choosing the right diet

Whereas cats tend to regulate their food intake quite naturally, dogs are happy to accept titbits and treats all day long. So cutting out the table scraps and resisting that ‘puppy dog eyes’ pleading look every time your dog wants a treat is important. Specialist dog food suppliers such as Pro Plan, Arden Grange and James Wellbeloved all produce healthy products that can help kick-start your dog’s diet. Their blends of essential vitamins, minerals and fatty acids are carefully regulated to keep the appeal and taste factors high, but calorie counts low.

Increasing the levels of activity is also essential to burn off excess fat, but ensure that very overweight dogs, as with overweight humans, begin any exercise programme slowly and at a rate that is not going to put undue pressure on their joints. It is always advisable to talk to your vet to plan a diet and exercise routine that will help reduce your dog’s weight without impacting on their wellbeing.

Good dog health and symptoms

In order to understand dog health problems some dog diseases, injuries and physical ailments are serious, while others are not. Dog health can easily be taken care of by imbibing good habits in the dog, and training him well.

A healthy dog is a happy dog having a positive attitude and personality.

Puppy Health Symptom

You must ensure food habits are regular and diet is well balanced. And make sure you give him exercise regularly and give him the love and attention that he needs, and he will be a healthy dog.

Let us look at good dog health and symptoms. All healthy dogs should have clear, bright eyes and a glossy, full coat. The skin should be clear and a vital indicator of a healthy dog is a dry nose, which is free from discharge. He should have a good appetite and lots of energy. All movements should be natural and free from pain.

Good dog care encourages the dog to have a good and correct weight, according to the breed standards. All dog owners should be aware that puppies are born with some immunity, but over time the immunity reduces greatly. Therefore, vaccinations are necessary. Some diseases may be hereditary and it is sometimes not feasible to detect them till the dog is at least 18 months old.

Viral infections are frequent among dogs and vaccination may prevent many of these infections. Some infections are adenovirus, parvo, corona, rabies and distemper. But all illnesses and diseases cannot be prevented by simply vaccinating the dog. Hence the pet must be monitored carefully in order to identify any problems as early as possible.

The best person to know and recognize any healthy problems is the dog-owner. He sees the dog every day he knows the quantity and quality of food that the dog consumes, the exercise that is done by the dog and the rest taken by him. It is vital, that the owner is aware of the Dog Health and Symptoms. So if there is anything unusual about the dog on a certain day, it should act as a warning sign of possible illness. It might simply be listlessness, or loss of appetite or biting, and these signs should be taken seriously by the owners and the root cause of the problem should be found.

Dog Health Symptoms Allergies Symptoms

The early indications of sickness can easily be identified if you are familiar with the Dog Health and Symptoms. The change could be behavioral or physical. On the physical side, the dog could be drinking an increased amount of water, whereas on the behavioral aspect, there could be a sudden change in the personality and attitude of the dog.

All dog-owners should inform themselves about the normal working system of the dog. Then it becomes easier to judge disease symptoms, and when they occur, they should know how to care for a sick dog.

Distemper disease affect body systems of the dog

Distemper is a disease that can affect many body systems of your dog. Your dog’s respiratory, gastrointestinal, and central nervous systems can be affected. The disease is often fatal especially when it strikes young puppies. This article will tell you everything owners need to know regarding canine distemper.

The air is the main mode of transmission of the virus that causes distemper. Dogs that breathe these airborne particles in will become infected. If your dog has been infected, you will shed the virus in his urine and feces. The virus won’t be gone even after the symptoms have gone away. Your dog will keep shedding the virus for a few weeks. After a complete recovery however, the dog will stop shedding the virus.

Symptoms and diagnosis of distemper disease

Dog Vaccination

Various bodily systems can be affected by distemper as mentioned earlier. Vomiting, conjunctivitis, and diarrhea are some of the most common symptoms. It is also common for dog to experience pneumonia or signs of another upper respiratory infection.

Dogs infected with this virus commonly lose their appetite, develop a fever, and experience eye inflammation. If the central nervous system is infected, your dog will experience depression, seizures, and loss of motor skills and mental abilities. If these symptoms occur, it may be assigned that there is something more seriously wrong with your dog.

The vet may have a hard time diagnosing distemper since some of its signs can be caused by other conditions. A laboratory test will need to be done to confirm a diagnosis. A blood test will show that your dog has low white blood cell counts.

Antibiotics may also be given to prevent secondary bacterial infections. Since most dogs experience diarrhea, medications can be given to get rid of it. Your dog will likely need intravenous fluids if the diarrhea lead to dehydration.

Distemper can be prevented using an available vaccine. This is all a part of the routine immunization process. Depending on the specific shot given, your dog may need to receive a booster shot every three years.

It’s important that all owners know about various dog health problems. Recognizing signs quickly that your dog is sick can be very helpful.

Did you know that most food that is fed to dogs today has extremely low nutritional content? If you feed your dog commercial dog food, you may be slowly killing your dog. Perhaps you think this is a little dramatic? Think again. If humans are fed a diet of unhealthy foods, they probably wont show any adverse signs for quite some time. But fed over many years, people will become sluggish, sick, and eventually die from degenerative diseases much earlier than they would otherwise pass from this life.

The same goes for dogs.

Dog feed

All commercial dog food which is extruded (cooked) at very high temperatures cannot be anything but bad for our dogs, whose natural diet in the wild is mainly fresh, raw meat. Even after dogs became domesticated, and then kept as pets, for decades they were fed home cooked food and table scraps, before anyone thought of commercializing dog food and selling cans of mush, or pieces of highly questionable biscuit-looking food called kibble.

Dogs used to live longer than they do now.

Examine baked and kibbled foods for the presence of burned spots on the biscuits. The presence of large numbers of burned biscuits indicates that the food has been cooked at such high temperatures that the nutrients are likely to be almost non-existent.

On the other hand, if dry products are damp, soft or stale, it means that they have been improperly processed, become damp in transit, become damp during storage, or that they are old.

Dry products that become damp quickly deteriorate from the action of mold and eventually bacteria. Sometimes the only indication that mold is beginning to attack a dry food is the musty odor smelled when a bag is opened. At other times it may be seen as a white, hairy beard or a bluish-green or black velvety coating over the food. Any food found to be moldy should be destroyed immediately and never fed to dogs.

Does any of this sound like food you would eat yourself?

If not, then even though its labelled as dog food and could possibly have some form of nutritional content (if you’re lucky), why feed such substandard rubbish to your dog? It really can be harmful over the long term. Why else do you think so many dogs suffer from degenerative diseases like heart disease, cancer, kidney failure, and more? These diseases were previously unknown in companion animals. Now they’re commonplace. And the increase in incidence of these degenerative diseases in dogs and other animals has occurred in direct proportion to the practice of giving pets raw food or table scraps, to giving them commercial pet food.

The answer?

Feed your dog a raw, or primarily raw, fresh food diet. The large part of the food should, of course, be meat. If you’re not a fan of raw food, then by all means give your dog home cooked food, made from premium ingredients which you would use for your own food. Of course, you can give your dog all the fat and offcuts from the meat that you don’t want. Dogs need some fat (unlike us!)

And if you really need the convenience of a pre-prepared dog food, then go for a top quality dog food – NOT one of the commercial brands found on your supermarket, or even pet store shelves. Even many vets have no idea about correct animal nutrition, believe it or not, and promote commercial dog foods that are peddled to them as premium food, when they’re nothing of the kind.

How do you know what a superior quality dog food is? Check for both the ingredients and the method of cooking. The ingredients should be primarily meat – not meat byproducts, a small proportion only of grains of all types, and preferably some fresh vegetables, fruit or herbs. As for the cooking method – the lower the heat, the better. Don’t go for anything that has been extruded (which is most kibble), or canned at high temperatures. If the method of cooking is not stated, then make further inquiries of the manufacturer, or go for one that does state the cooking method – freeze dried or baked are acceptable.

Dog fleas treatment

All dogs pick up fleas, ticks, and chiggers at one time or another, usually during the warm weather months. Even a pampered city pet can pick up a stray flea from a potted plant. Hunting dogs often return home with a collection of chiggers or ticks. Fleas hop from one dog to another with amazing speed and agility. Your pet only needs to greet one flea infested friend in order to acquire the beginning of a flea colony of his own.

External parasites are not a special affliction of dogs. The dog is simply a convenient host for them. We would probably have them too, if our bodies were covered with hair and we ran around without shoes and clothing and sat or slept on the ground. Fleas are the most common, the easiest to detect and to get rid of. Fleas appear as black specks on a fine tooth comb, and a single one can drive a dog crazy.

The worst part of fleas is that they act as hosts to tapeworm larvae, and if your dog swallows one you may end up with a worm problem too. You can trap fleas in a silky smooth coat with a flea comb, but fleas that nestle in the dense undercoat of double coated dogs must be treated with a product that penetrates the skin, and a regular mild treatment is safer than an occasional severe one.

Dog fleas treatment

In one day a single flea can bite your pet 400 times, while consuming more than its own body weight in blood. Some dogs can contract flea allergy dermatitis, an allergic reaction to the flea’s saliva. The severity and length of the flea season varies depending on what part of the country you live in, but it is best to treat your pet in early spring, (April – May). In northern climates, flea and tick season usually lasts approximately 4 months, but in the extreme south, fleas can live all year long.

There are more than 2000 species of fleas in the United States alone, but the one that attacks most pets is the cat flea, Ctenocephalides Felis. A cat flea can lay up to one egg per hour, and within two days, a wormlike larvae will hatch from those eggs. The eggs are oval, smooth, and about 0.5mm in size. The hatched larvae will range from 1.5 to 5mm in length. The complete cycle from egg to adult takes approximately 30 to 75 days depending on temperature and humidity.

Adult fleas are about 1/16 to 1/8 inch long, are dark reddish brown, wingless, hard bodied, have three pairs of legs and are flattened from side to side. Fleas can jump vertically up to seven inches, and horizontally up to fourteen inches. They have piercing – sucking mouth parts and spines on their body. Adult fleas cannot survive or lay eggs without a blood meal, but may live from two months to one year without feeding.

In order to effectively control an infestation, fleas must be removed from the pet, the home, and the yard. Starting with the pet, there are shampoos, topical treatments, sprays, collars, and oral medications. The least recommended is shampoo, due to the grooming the pet does to his own coat. The pesticides can be toxic if they are consumed in quantity. Topical treatments are better, along with sprays and collars, but the best and most recommended is the oral medication Lufenuron called “Program” from your veterinarian.

To clean the home, all areas frequented by the dog should be cleaned thoroughly by vacuuming, washing bedding and rugs and possible treatment by insecticides. Treating your carpet with a Borate powder such as “Borax” laundry powder works as a poison upon ingestion by the flea, simply sprinkle the powder on your carpets and leave it for a few h ours before vacuuming will rid most homes of their fleas. A second treatment can follow if necessary. It’s cheap, you can do it yourself and there are no insecticides used.

To treat the lawn and around the homes exterior, pyrethroids such as “Archer” or “Nylan”, as well as fenoxy carb such as “Logic” or “Torus” can be effective. Outdoor treatment is usually only done in extreme or severe cases of flea infestation and may not be necessary. You should however keep your lawn trimmed to create a drier, less ideal environment for flea larvae. If you don’t want to handle the pesticides yourself, any licensed professional pest control operator can do the treatment for you.

In summary, you should check with your veterinarian before using any form of flea treatment. Never use products for dogs on a cat, as cats are more sensitive to the pesticide and they groom themselves more thoroughly. Never apply pesticides to young, pregnant, or sick animals, and use alternative methods to control fleas, such as combing frequently with a flea comb, vacuum your home frequently and dispose of the vacuum bag, wash all pet bedding regularly, and bathe your pet with a pesticide free shampoo. Prevention is much easier than dealing with an infestation.

Dogs that have allergies show many signs including watery eyes, coughing and sneezing, excessive scratching and biting, vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, and moodiness. When your dog is suffering from allergies, you may notice one or more of these symptoms. Learning what causes these allergies is the first step toward treating your dog and preventing further attacks.

Many allergies that dogs suffer from are caused by insects such as fleas and ticks, or by parasites. When you bring your dog home from a breeder or from a shelter or pet store, schedule an appointment with a vet as soon as possible. Make sure the dog has all of its shots and that is has been dewormed. This will prevent parasites from causing an allergic reaction in your dog. While you may have to do this more than once during their lifetime, getting rid of the parasites will help your dog’s temperament and keep them healthy.

If you noticed small red bites on your dog or if the dog has been scratching the same area until bald spots appear, then they may have fleas, ticks, or mites. This allergic reaction is caused by insect saliva. If your dog has open wounds, you should wait until the wounds heal before spraying or bathing them with medicine that kills the insects and their eggs. Take your dog to the vet if this is the first occurrence. The vet may be able to prescribe an ingestible pill that will protect them from future infestation. You may also want to keep your dog indoors during flea and tick season.

When your dog vomits more than once a week or has diarrhea for more than one or two days, they may have an allergy to dog food. Switching to another brand or feeding the dog softer food may solve this problem. You should take the dog to the vet anyway so that they can make sure the dog is healthy. Extreme diarrhea will lead to dehydration, so make sure you have plenty of water for your dog to drink.

If your dog’s mood changes suddenly or you notice that they are not as playful as they once were, then you should take the dog to the vet. If the dog has eaten something it shouldn’t or if it is suffering from allergies, it will not want to play as much as it used to. Finding out the cause of their allergy may be difficult because, much like human beings, your dog may be allergic to more than one thing.

Research your dog’s breed to see if there are specific items it could be allergic to and see if they are present in your home. Monitor your dog to see how it behaves and what it is eating. Sometimes eating too much grass can cause an allergy attack. Once you find the causes of the allergy, take the steps necessary to reduce the dog’s exposure what is causing the allergy as much as possible.
