The mixed breed Labradoodle is quickly becoming a breed many dog fanciers are raving about in the USA. The Labradoodle is a mixed-breed dog or “mutt” many think are considered a breed. These dogs were bred to suitable for people with allergies to be a hypoallergenic dog, however some Labradoodles do shed.
A Labrador and Poodle mix is what is now known as the Labradoodle. Australian Labradoodle lines have bred in, Cocker Spaniel/Poodle crosses, Water Spaniels, and Soft-Coated Wheaten Terriers to name a few.
A non-registrable, non-showable dog that many breeders are selling for over $1000. Some call the Labradoodle a designer dog, when really the dog is the same as any other dog found in a dog pound, a mixed-breed dog.
I am sorry, but this is one dog breed I am not a fan of at all!
When breeding two different breeds of dogs together, puppies can carry genetic faults from both breeds. In the case of the Labradoole, let’s take a look at some common health issues of the Labrador and Poodle.
Common Poodle Health Issues:
- Sebaceous Adenitis
- Addison’s Disease
- Idiopathic Epilepsy
- Hip Dysplasia
Common Labrador Health Issues:
- Luxating patella
- Hip Dysplasia
- Progressive retinal atrophy
The concern I have for Labradoodle puppies and dogs are the possibilities of health issues. Even though claims have been made that Labradoodles are generally healthy, a number of Multigenerational Labradoodles have been found to suffer from progressive retinal atrophy.
Another issue I have with the Labradoodle is there are no set standards for the breeders to follow, as each organization tied to these dogs has different standards. Obviously because the breed is not recognized as a breed, however the dogs come in so many different sizes, colors, and different coat types.
Update: The pictures used to display the Labradoodle dog has been changed, as 2 people claim to both own the same dog! The new picture shown above is another variation of the Labradoodle dog. Photo from Flickr.
This is just a new puppy-mill gimick, I beg people, don’t buy these “designer dogs” from pet stores. As a professional dog trainer I can tell you the majority of these new mixes are not good choices, health or temperment wise.
In fact there aren’t any of the new designer dogs I would recommend over trying to adopt/save an unwanted pet or even purchase from a proven breeder.
cweed,
I could not agree more! I think people have a tendency to buy things that seem to be new or hot, and never think about supporting the people who are creating the so called designer dogs.
