Cool dog furniture collections

After years of owning dogs, one thing that has always drove me crazy were having dog crates, dog pillows or kennels in my house. I understand we need them, but they just do not fit into my decor and many owners try to hide them, which puts our beloved dogs out of sight.

I was excited to come across a collection of furniture designed for people who are just like me! Pit Bull Good Will Ambassador

The perfect ambassador for the Pit Bull breed

With all of the bad press the Pit Bull gets I just love finding amazing stories of this wonderful breed. If you are still on the back burner about the Pitbull breed check out these pit bull myths.

Pit Bull Good Will Ambassador

Elsie, a Pit Bull whom called the Western PA. Humane Society home for seven months has not only found a wonderful home. When Becky saw Elsie, she said it was love at firsts site. Herb, Becky’s husband was not so accepting of the new addition to the family being a pitbull.

Shortly after Elsie move into her new home, Herb was diagnosed with cancer. It did not take long for Herb to change his mind about his new pitbull dog member. Elsie was the only one that he actually wanted to be close to him while he was receiving his chemo treatments. Becky said, “She lay across his chest as he slept on the couch and was the best medicine he could’ve asked for,” Herb is now in remission and doing well, and is nuts about Elsie.

After Elsie shows off for people, she acts as the perfect ambassador for the Pit Bull breed. Many claim “Meeting this sweet dog has completely changed my perception of pit bulls.”

Not only that, Elsie and her dog-mom have been selected as the third-quarter winners of the ASPCA Adopt-a Bull contest. The contest features successful adoptions of Pit Bull terriers made at shelters which are made by using the Meet Your Match™ program. Her win gave the Western PA. Humane Society a $4,000 grant and Elsie and her “mom” and the shelter are eligible to compete for the grand prize in the “Vote for Your Favorite Match” online contest to be held in February, 2009.

It is always nice to hear stories of Pit Bulls being placed into good homes. As a Pit Bull lover myself, it brings me much joy to hear stories of these dogs and how they really are amazing pets and companions! Stories like this one are great for changing the perceive many people have of Pit Bull dogs.

Do you know of any Pit Bulls that have been adopted and changed the mind of others?

Avoid the Animal ER this Holiday

Tips for avoiding any dog injuries this holiday season

[caption id="attachment_350" align="alignleft" width="199" caption="Christmas trees can also prove hazardous to dogs"]christmas dog injuries hazardous[/caption]

All dog owners need to keep in mind the potential hazards that commonly take place during the holiday season, according to Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center of Kansas City. Every holiday season VSEC sees a rise in the number of emergency patients presented for having ingested such harmful items as decorations, toys and toxic foods commonly found around the home.

“It is only natural that our pets, as a member of the family, also join in on our holiday parties and gatherings,” says Dr. Jeff Dennis, DVM, ACVIM, an internist with Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Services of Kansas City. “People forget how inquisitive dogs and cats can be. Our four-legged best friends are intrigued by the shiny decorations and smelly treats traditionally found during this time of year.”

Dr. Dennis recommends the following precautions for pet owners this holiday season:

Chocolate in sufficient quantities can be quite toxic to dogs. See our dog chocolate poisoning

Christmas trees can also prove hazardous to dogs. Dogs can suffer severe burns from chewing on the electrical cords and can also get hurt from falling Christmas trees. This is very common among puppies, to want to pull on the tree, so make sure you keep a good eye on all dogs around the tree!

Beware of the damaging effects holiday plants can have on your pets if ingested. Poinsettias can cause mild irritation but mistletoe, daffodil, lilies and amaryllis bulbs are extremely toxic and can be a serious threat to your pet’s health if you do not seek immediate veterinary attention.

Puppy Baked In Oven

Pekingese poodle dog has been a victim of a dog crime

The last month has been horrible for crimes against dogs. It seems as if the heartless dog nappers and killers are really on the lose. Unfortunately, yet another dog has been a victim of a dog crime. A 5-month-old Pekingese poodle mix was put into an oven and the oven was turned on when his home was being burglarized.

The dogs mother came home to find her kitchen engulfed with smoke and her puppy in the oven! Green Bay police are investigating it as a burglary and an animal cruelty case.

“Cases like this that involve torturing an animal — and use of fire or heat — I find particularly disturbing and particularly predictive of the potential for future acts of violence,” said Randall Lockwood, senior vice president of Anti-Cruelty Field Services for the ASPCA.

This is absolutely horrible. I can not imagine how the pups mom must be feeling right now, and to think the sick person or persons who did this are still running around free!

The Wisconsin chapter of the Humane Society of the United States has offered a $2,500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible. Anyone with information can call Green Bay police at (920) 448-3208 or can remain anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at (920) 432-7867.

Goldendoodles and Mini Goldendoodles

A Goldendoodle dog is a cross between a Poodle and a Golden retriever and the result is a friendly, easily trained dog that is great for families (some say)– especially those families whose members have allergies. Mini Goldendoodles are a cross between a Golden retriever and a Miniature Poodle. They are smaller than the average Goldendoodle, hence the “mini” attached to their name. The breed was established in the 1990’s, soon after Labradoodles became popular. Goldendoodles are considered a mixed breed.
